This is our team. A group of 12 runners wearing these awesome outfits mainly consisting of cutoff jeans, wife-beaters, headbands and tube socks (I'm a loser for not donning the shorts. Next time, I promise!). There would be lots of chafing going on during the 199 mile run. And lots of beer drinking.
We got lots of comments, snickers, but mainly cheers. Mostly people couldn't believe that a group of ridiculous looking people could actually run. And believe me, by the end of the race, running was the last thing we wanted to be doing. We placed 18th overall out of 202 teams with a finishing time of 26 hours, 6 minutes, and 50 seconds.
Mike is awesome. He had the first leg, so he represented the team at the starting line. He truly embraced the part. I think he actually enjoyed wearing that outfit a little too much.

A couple teams were a good match for us. Notably, Google Too (the fast women). We were neck and neck with them the entire time, so we'd chat at each runner exchange and cheer them on when we saw them on the course. In the end, they beat us, but just barely. I personally think the men wanted to run behind the Google Girls just to admire the view. I don't blame 'em. Hot stuff!

I made good time on my 3 legs (leg 5 and 17) despite the fact that my legs were still sore from the training I did that week (I should have tapered a little at least). The first two legs were rated as "easy" and were both 5 miles. I averaged 7:57 and 8:03 on the first two, respectively. I was a bit delirious during the 2nd leg, which was around 2am because I was tired, it was dark, and I had no idea where I was. The blinking light on my headlamp put me in some kind of hypnotic trance and I definitely wasn't thinking straight. The third leg (leg 29) was a brutal 3 mile, almost 1000 foot killer climb up the Santa Cruz mountains, but I managed a 10:10 pace and even passed 5 people. And it was during the day so at least I could see, but then again, looking at a steep hill looming ahead isn't really what I want to see.
Sure there were some mishaps during the course of the race like lost runner, some indigestion incidents, harassment of our studly men by some other men (can you say jealous?), and the baton/bracelet got lost (by yours truly)... But all in all, it was an awesomely fun time. The Relay is officially my favorite race.
