Yesterday, on the way home from Tahoe, we stopped off at Ikea since we had the Zipcar for a few more hours and didn't want to waste an opportunity with a car in the East Bay. We bought some stuff to help our house, like a new shower curtain rod to replace our crusty, rusty old one that actually had so much friction due to the rust that it made opening the curtain a bit of an effort. And a new double towel bar to replace the old one falling off the wall. Yoshi picked out some stuff to help organize her bedroom--boxes for clothes, a recycling bin, a cute hanging basket. I want her to find organizing fun. We wanted to get some kind of narrow piece of furniture for our bedroom, but the particular item we wanted was sold out. Bummer.
We spent today putting everything in order. Tom dealt with the towel bar in the bathroom, which took a lot longer than anticipated (isn't that always the case with Ikea?) and a trip to the hardware store. And now we're going to have to paint the walls to cover up a bunch of puttied drilled holes once we find the motivation. But at least our shower curtains now move like silk. And Yoshi's room is slightly more organized. She tossed out about half her papers to break in her recycling bin.
I went through all my cards and stationery making supplies. I decided to get rid of just about everything. Paper. Probably 1000 envelopes. Screen printing machine. Gluing machine. Die cutting gizmo. I hope to sell some of it off to recoup some of the cost. The rest will be donated to Yoshi's school. I have tons of cards, a portion of it is selling at my Etsy store. Tom said he'd help me write some cards to send to friends and family. Truth be told, while I'm pretty good at making cards, I'm absolutely horrible at sending any. But freeing up space is good motivation.
It's taken me a long time to shed my hoarding ways. When I moved away to college, I took everything that I could, including an electric piano keyboard, a gajillion crafting supplies, and a 3 foot Snoopy head pillow. I still have a ton of stuff, but I'm slowly getting rid of it. And more importantly, I'm trying hard to limit what I bring into the house.
It's a constant struggle.

I wanted to sigh a big sigh of contentment when reading this post. I want to capture that forward motion!
Yoshi doesn't strike me as a natural hoarder. I wish I had it in me to try "fun organizing". However I really think shit just needs to go in Hen's room. (and mine too. heh.)
